6 Ways For Guys To Always Look Sharp in Office

In this post, we are going to give gentlemen some of the best tips and tricks to always looking sharp at work.

We wrote in this article on the common menswear mistakes seen in offices; explaining what they are and how guys can easily avoid them. Correcting these mistakes can up your dress game almost immediately.

Staying sharp in the office can be challenging at times – things like Monday blues, long working hours, lack of quality sleep at night, daily stressful meetings, daily commute, family issues – all these can add up and life can take its toll on all of us.

Staying sharp and alert requires one to have amber rest, consume healthier choice of food and vitamins, exercise regularly and more. This post is not so much about changing the ‘inside’ but more on what you can do on the outside to help look and feel sharp every day.

According to this article by forbes, it is no secret that what you wear and how you look says a lot about you. In this article, it is mentioned that although what you wear neither defines who we are as a person nor determines our value as a human being, however, in the temporal realm of mere mortals, fair or not, people judge us by the way we look and that includes the way we dress and groom ourselves.

In other words, like it or not, if we want to succeed in the office, getting our dressing game and grooming strategy right can do nothing less than help us increase the odds.

The strategies we’ve curated in this list can be implemented almost immediately and results can also almost be immediate. The challenger is of course, whether you will take action (if you are still with us, we assume you would).

Without further ado, let’s get on to the list:

1) Regular Hair cut

Remember back in the school days when the teacher or discipline master conducts hair check every week or every morning. For Singaporean guys, maintain the length of our hair is also something mandatory.

This hair maintenance routine however, changes once we stepped into the working society. Be it due to laziness, time constrain or just guys trying to stretch out the frequency of hair cutting as a mean to reduce expenses throughout the year, most of the working male adults don’t cut hair as frequently.

Getting our regular trims can improve the look and feel of your hair as trimming away of unhealthy split ends prevent breakage, making your hair appear thicker and even shinier. Getting your trimmed regularly will keep your looks fresh and it’s easier to maintain as well.

The easiest way to ensure you get your hair trimmed regularly is keep a haircut schedule (i.e. set in your calendar to notify you on the first weekend of every month).

Side note: Cutting your hair regularly does not affect its growth rate or the maximum hair length. The latter is determined is determined genetically. This myth came from the observation of men’s facial hair that grows thicker with every shave. It’s called, ‘puberty.’

2) Shave That Facial Hair

One of the easiest, quickest and cheapest ways to look sharp is to get your daily shaving done. Having facial hair (especially the unkept ones) can be distracting and make you look older and can come off as someone lazy.

That said, if you are fortunate to have nice thick facial hair, invest in a good electronic trimmer and spend some time learning how to get them nicely trimmed. (Thick facial is pretty rare for Asians, other than Indians).

On the side note: Most girls enjoy kissing guys without ‘pokey’ or bushy facial hairs around their lips (just saying).

3) Scent

We often take our sense of smell in the daily lives for granted, thinking that only your sense of sight and taste is all that matters. Truth is, our sense of smell plays an important role in our daily decisions making, the way we fell and certain scent can even trigger our memories.

Research found that the part of our brain that tastes and smells is part of the emotional brain where our personality lies. Specific smells have also been found to increase alertness which in turn results in higher productivity rates.

Have you ever walk pass someone who smelled really nice and can’t help but take another deep breath just to enjoy the scent? Especially some ladies with really nice scent on. Yeah, it works the same when ladies got around guys.

4) Nicely Pressed Shirt

Everything you wear has the potential to help you look sharp. What’s more direct and obvious than having a well pressed and irons shirt. Other than your face, the shirt is perhaps the first thing people see and notice when they meet with you.

Especially in the workplace, clothing significantly influences how others perceive us and how they respond toward us.

If you want to look sharp, learning how to iron pants and shirts is key. Put in the effort to iron your clothes and you’ll look neat and way more put together.

This YouTube video by Apparel Illustrated give a good explanation on ironing your shirt. You can ignore the ziplock bag step but do pay attention on how to read the care label for ironing instructions.

This tutorial will cover the way to iron the dress pants.

Notice how they use a cloth to avoid contact between the iron and the pant. This will prevent the pants from turning shiny over time.

Let’s break out the ironing board and let’s get going. Or just hand it over to your mum or spouse to do it (they will do much better).

5) Clean Looking Shoes

This is pretty self-explanatory. Ensure there are no holes in the front, by the side or below (don’t think people do not know or don’t notice).

Some guys really abuses their shoe – kicking things, rubbing the surface against the wall, drags their feet against the floor – causing wear and tear within a few months breaking into a new pair of shoe.

Invest in shoe care products. They are cheap and can be used for a very long time. All you need is a few minutes per week to brush the shoes.

Also pay attention to your walking strides. Heel Striking is one of the most common cause wear and tear of your dress shoe, especially the heels of their shoe.

One of the best ways to correct heel striking is focus on landing your feet directly underneath you rather than out ahead of you. In other words, focus on mid-foot landing in order to avoid heel striking. Not to walk like a robot where you ‘die-die’ must land flat on your feet. The key is to focus and practice landing as flat as you can in a natural manner.

To drive this point a step further, switching up between specs and contact lens can really freshen up and inject the ‘surprise’ element to people around you.

Try this: go for contact lens and formal look during the earlier part of the week and switch over to framed specs towards the weekend. On Fridays or more casual days, you can also opt for frameless or more funky and trendy specs.
